Nellie Bly (1864 – 1922) was a writer, journalist, inventor and industrialist. Perhaps most famous for her trip around the world in less than eighty days, she undertook the trip to see if Jules Verne’s famous book could be turned into reality. In 1889 she started a journey of almost 25,000 miles around the globe that took her to England, France (meeting with Jules Verne), Italy, Ceylon, Singapore (buying a monkey), Hong Kong and Japan. Thinking of beauty today, I remembered being lucky enough to see Botticelli’s Birth of Venus at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Even in print the image is mesmerizing; gloriously unapologetical, celebrating beauty. To be eye to eye with the superstar painting that I had seen in art books countless of times, it felt like meeting a very famous person. Seeing the touch of the artist in the wave of her hair, her alabaster skin and […]

When photo-journalist / documentary-photographer Mary Ellen Mark died on May 25th this year, Vice magazine wrote about her work that it sings truths about the humor, horror, and joy of being alive. Not only was she a stills photographer on more than a hundred films (including famous ones like Apocalypse Now and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest), she spent a life time documenting both the less fortunate and celebrities alike, always looking for that […]

Some clue that an ancestor had carefully hidden away decades ago, hoping that skeleton would be taken to the grave with its last witness, forever silenced as if it had never happened. Zooey […]

Kiev based artist Alexey Kondakov had a great idea: why not photoshop characters from classical paintings in photos of everyday day situations? The series is called The Daily Life Of Gods. I really like how these figures fit into their new environment. There something poetic, even fragile about their presence in these ordinary settings and not just because they have no clothes on. ᔥ boredpanda.com Song for today: Luscious Jackson – Naked Eye

Bertha Boynton Lum (1869 – 1954) was an American artist and printmaker. In the early 20th century she travelled to Japan to learn the art of wood block printing. She would return often to the land of the rising sun and often used Japanese folklore as the subject of her prints. She also lived in China in the 1920’s and helped to introduce wood block techniques in the west.       Song for today: […]

More than a hundred years ago photographer Mervyn O’Gorman took pictures of his daughter Christina using the autochrome process which enabled him to capture her in vibrant colors. When I think of the past, I think of it being in black and white, even if I rationally know this to be untrue. These stunning photos prove me wrong. ᔥseamlessphoto * If you’re in the neighbourhood, you can see these images with your own eyes at […]
